Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have I not commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.
Our gracious God is willing to forgive our sins, but that does not mean that the consequences of those sins will not continue to haunt us. David’s sins were magnified many times over in the lives of his children. This chapter is a case in point. It is filled with incest, treachery, hatred, and murder. And it all started because of one night of passion on the part of King David. Yielding to one sin makes it easy to yield to another and yet another, until we can no longer tell the difference between what is right and wrong.
There are some things you should fear. Fear the depravity of your soul. Fear the realization that living your life outside of the control of the Holy Spirit can lead you to places you never thought possible. Fear how your life, if given over to sin, can lead others down the same path. God has revealed these sinful activities to remind us of the consequences of our sin.
